Nursery News - April 2008

Enterprise - Handy Bags

We would like to thank you for your support in our enterprise by purchasing the bags and encouraging so many friends, family and workmates to do the same. With your help we managed to sell all our bags and all funds raised from this initiative are to be used to in line with ongoing nursery development plan to further develop the nursery outdoor resources. The total has now been added to the Chevron donation and part of it has already been used towards the outdoor sand pit. This has been purchased and should arrive at nursery shortly.

Outside Play

As it is the summer term we are hoping for lots of nice sunny weather and plenty time outside with the children.  Please can we remind parents to use sun cream to help protect your child’s skin.We have a sun cream dispenser which is allocated in the nursery entrance, which you can use when dropping your child off.  If you think your child may be allergic to the nursery sun cream please feel free to use your own.

All parents in the nursery have given consent to staff applying cream to children however it is much more manageable if parents could help by doing it before the children go into nursery.  A notice will be made on the notice board if we are planning to use the outside area that session.

Nursery Walks

As part of the Nursery Curriculum the children must become familiar with the Nursery and the local environment. To help us achieve this we are planning to go on a walk each Monday. Depending on the walk/destination the whole class may go together or smaller groups will take turns to go over a few weeks.

The Curriculum Guidelines encourages children to experience being outside in all weathers so unless it is obviously heavy rain the walk will still go ahead. We therefore ask you to ensure that your child comes dressed appropriately. Please can we ask that even it is very sunny when you drop your child at nursery they still have a jacket with them and are wearing suitable foot wear.  Sandals with no socks are not great for walks in MacDonald woods for instance!

If walks are done in small groups, a list of children who are going on the walk put up on the daily notice board, so that parents are aware of who is leaving the building that day.

We have adult:child ratios that we have to adhere to and they alter according to the age of the child. Kate Erridge will take the small group of children along with a helper who has a completed disclosure Scotland form.

Baking

Every Tuesday a small group of children will have the opportunity to take part in baking. The children will be working together and learning about recipes, ingredients measuring and food preparation. The baking will be given to the children involved to take home and share with you. Baking money for the term is £1, which is used towards the cost of ingredients.

Library/Learning Packs

As you are aware, children going to school in August are receiving learning packs from the Early Stage Department. Each pack contains a book and activities that are related to the story, therefore these children will not be choosing a library book from the nursery library this term.

Time is required to check learning packs before they can be handed out to another child. A new learning pack will only be issued to a child once the previous one has been returned.

Class A - Learning packs should be returned to the nursery by the Tuesday and children will receive their new pack on the Wednesday morning.

Class B  - Learning packs should be returned to the nursery by the Thursday and children will receive their new pack on the Friday morning.

Children in their ante-pre school year will continue with their nursery library session.  This will be done on a Tuesday. Can we ask parents to make sure that the book is returned by the following Tuesday to allow staff to sort tickets and books before the next library time. As we only have a small selection of library books, new books will not be issued unless books have been returned.

Sports Day

Gym session this term will be on a Wednesday.  During our gym hall sessions this term, the children will be involved in potted sports activities.

We plan to hold a Nursery Potted Sports on Wednesday 21st May which parents are invited to come along and watch. The Potted Sports will be held in Tennis Courts next to the nursery building.

In the case of bad weather on the day and sports been cancelled, we will hopefully move sports to Thursday 22nd May or if bad weather continues then we will postpone it to Wednesday 28th May. This will have to be decided on the day and staff will write information on the white board in the nursery entrance.

On a Wednesday, Class A sports will start at 10am and Class B will start at 1:45pm. If it is held on a Thursday 22nd May, Class B will start at 10am and Class A will start at 1:45pm.

Sports should last approximately 50 minutes. Nursery session will finish once the potted sports have come to an end and parents can take the children home then.

Footwear

Please can we ask parents to remember that slippers are not an appropriate from of footwear in the nursery as we regularly participate in physical play or movement.  As this is a safety issue we would appreciate your full support with this.  Thank you.

If you have any difficulties with supplying gym shoes please speak to nursery staff.

Mister Bug

As part of our work on Knowledge and Understanding of the world the children will be learning about a variety of mini-beasts, their features and habitats.

To help support this work we have arranged a visit from “Mister Bug” for Thursday 8th May. Mister Bug brings a variety of animals to the school such as stick insects, cockroaches, snails, millipedes, tarantulas, scorpions, lizards and snakes. The children will be introduced to the variety of creatures, learn a bit more about them and have the opportunity to touch or hold some of them.

To help cover the cost of the visit we ask parents to make a £2 donation with the school paying the remainder. Children who do not normally attend nursery on a Thursday are welcome to come along that day.

Nursery Report

All the children in the nursery will receive a report in May.  The reports are written to provide you with information about how your child has been getting on over the year in the nursery.  A parents evening is organised the following week to speak to staff if you have any questions or issues from your child’s report.

Please indicate what you would like to speak to staff about on the tear off slip.  If you happy with the report you may feel it is un-necessary to make a parent’s appointment and you are welcome to make a comment on the slip instead.  As you are aware, in the nursery we prefer to speak to parents on a daily basis if there are any concerns regarding your child.

Spring Clean?

Most of the children in nursery are going up to primary 1 after the summer. If you are having a spring clean and have any books, games, puzzles or toys that your child has grown out of please consider us in the nursery! As long as all pieces are there and they are in good condition we would welcome any donations.  If it is something we already have or possibly wouldn’t be able to use we will then pass it on to another class/charity shop for you with your consent.
